Psychological Antecedents of Adoption and Use of Artificial Intelligence Among University of Lagos Students

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of academic integrity, technological literacy, and need for achievement on the adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI) among undergraduate students at the University of Lagos. Using a quantitative-cross-sectional design, data was collected from 381 participants (196 males, 185 females) recruited from eleven faculties. Four standardized scales were used to measure academic integrity, technological literacy, need for achievement, and attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence. Results indicated a significant relationship between academic integrity and AI use for academic purposes. Access to technology was found to marginally moderate the relationship between technological literacy and AI use, with a significant positive relationship at higher levels of access. A significant positive correlation was observed between need for achievement and AI use. No significant gender differences in AI adoption were found. These findings suggest that academic integrity, technological literacy (moderated by access), and need for achievement play substantial roles in determining AI adoption and use among undergraduates, highlighting the dynamic interaction of factors influencing the integration of AI in academic settings..
