Gender and Emotional Resilience as Correlates of Work Engagement among School Teachers in Ogbomoso Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract

The contributions of teachers are crucial in educational environments. Therefore, comprehending the factors that affect teachers’ work engagement is highly significant. This study examined the influence of gender and emotional resilience on work engagement among school teachers in Ogbomoso metropolis, Nigeria. The research employed a cross-sectional approach of the quantitative research design and data were collected using standardized scales. A multistage sampling approach utilizing cluster and simple random selection techniques was used to select a total of 965 teachers from 64 schools throughout the five local government areas of Ogbomoso. .  The result shows a significant gender difference in work engagement among the selected teachers in Ogbomoso metropolis (f (963) t= .284; p <.05). Male teachers had (M= 23.13 SD= 7.25) while female teachers had (M= 31.24 SD=10.24). Emotional resilience was found to significantly influence work engagement among the selected teachers in Ogbomoso metropolis (r=.392, r2 =318 F=10.583; p <.01). Similarly, the regression showed that emotional resilience has a significant influence on work engagement among the selected school teachers in Ogbomoso metropolis (β=.337, t=4.583, p<.01). Based on these findings, the study concludes that emotional resilience significantly impacts job engagement among teachers, with female teachers exhibiting higher levels of work engagement than their male colleagues. The research recommends that improving teachers’ work engagement can be accomplished by strengthening their emotional resilience skills and fostering a friendly environment and sense of community among teachers, administrators, and principals.
