Physical Workplace Environment and Employees’ Commitment in Selected Ceramics Firms in Ogun state, Nigeria

Abstract

The paper examined the relationship between physical workplace environmental factors (ventilation, lighting and furniture) and employee’s commitment among employees working in ceramic sanitary ware factories in Nigeria. The primary objective of this study is to examine how physical workplace environment such as ventilation, lighting and furniture affect employees’ commitment. The study used a survey research design and primary data were obtained from the participants using an adapted questionnaire. The population was two hundred and twenty-five (225) out of which a sample size of one hundred and forty-four (144) was determined via Taro Yamani sample size formula. However, only one hundred and thirty-two (132) responses were used for analyses using Pearson Product Moment Correlation statistics. Results of the tests reveal that physical work environment such as ventilation, lighting and furniture and employees’ commitment are positively related to performance of employees of ceramic sanitary ware factories. It was concluded that positive relationship exists between physical workplace environment and employee commitment, suggesting that employee commitment would be improved when they take motivations form their workplace environment. It was therefore recommended that management should improve on the physical workplace environment conditions such as good lighting system, better space management to allow good ventilation and standard office furniture to facilitate effective performance and improved commitment within the workplace and on tasks’ performance.
